The Emperor Tiberius is a very superstitious man. When the grave of a very famous fortuneteller from the age of Antiquity known as Berenice is discovered in the Egyptian dessert, he orders a transcription of the hieroglyphics found. The mysterious death of two of the calligraphers and the disappearance of a third will prompt Tiberius to send for Estephanos, a famous Greek rhetorician, now private investigator.
