In 1937, Mitxel leaves Guernica to join the Basque Army in the defense of Bilbao. He knows little about the war that will leave him without a mother, without a brother, and without a home, and that will ultimately lead him to Mora de Toledo.
There, María is the sole survivor of her family. She will never forget the young militiaman who tore her brother from her arms. From 1937 to 1977, from the Spanish Civil War to the first general elections after Franco’s dictatorship, the lives of Mitxel and María become intertwined as they journey through the history of a country scarred by a conflict in which, one way or another, everyone ended up losing.
Radio España Independiente, the Spanish Communist Party’s radio station in exile, and the city of Bucharest also bear witness to the protagonists’ dramatic lives during the Cold War and under Nicolae Ceau?escu’s regime, whose political police, the Securitate, will lead to an unexpected ending.
