What hides behind the death of Jerónimo Larrea? Why does it happen in Madrid, a difficult city, but one which he has chosen to rebuild his life? Grisselda, the main character, an alcoholic actress, passionate reader and interpreter of Jean Genet, does not accept the passive stance of the victim, nor the defeat as a personal or collective course. But the border is fragile, something the other voices in the novel reaffirm, where a suicide is not always a suicide, and neither is an old friend and a mate, and a psychiatrist is some one who can heal, or a brother a fraternal link, or a drunk an amnesic; in ‘’Backlight” we find crime, madness, theater, war, corruption, in a plot that introduces us into the dark reasons of power; in Argentina, and also in Spain; which lasts since the second half of the XX century till our days. For Griselda, intent on investigating, it is a matter of holding back, and of staying awake, in the arena of major issues. While for Checo, impunity is his only possibility of survival. Only in the backlight is it possible to go beyond the surface of things, it seems to tell us, to see the complex web of life and history.
