This story begins as a fairy tale and ends up as a journey through Europe and America during the years between 1905 and 1911. It begins with a young princess living in the small village of Siret, located in the heart of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who dreams of leaving her family
home, putting behind her the lands of her upbringing, and embarking on a new life far from the village where she was born. Her mother has passed away and she lives in an old castle, surrounded by decrepitude, rickety walls, and rooms long since closed and now occupied only by bats. Her father, who has abandoned himself to the addictions of gambling and  drinking, wastes his last years playing card games with lackeys.

Card games where he wagers his inheritance, his estate, his properties, and what scarce wealth that he still has. This is also the story of an unforeseen protagonist. An object that becomes the center of great hope, ambition, and human desire. One of those inventions that modernity has brought about and that has become one of the greatest attractions for the society of the time. A carousel of horses, an epitome of progress, mechanics, and electricity,
that, in the urban squares where it is erected, always draws a huge crowd. An object designed to offer amusement to children and adults, adorned by its creator, a hairdresser with the pretensions of an inventor, with meticulousness and enormous details of craftsmanship, but which, on this occasion, is destined to become the lucid metaphor that emerges in the background of this story, the most European of all those written by novelist Sergio Ramirez in his extensive career.
