During the Spanish Civil War, a group of military men receive an offer by a Swiss aristocrat to steal a series of Spanish art pieces, for which they will be handsomely rewarded. The first theft is a complete success and so they continue with their deeds throughout the entire war-torn territory, thanks to their contacts amongst both warring camps. On the other hand, a bunch of young recruits on the Nationalists side trying to elude the war are able to carry out assignments in the rearguard, thus achieving their first aim: survival. Their objective is accomplished in part, for they are assigned to an elite group destined to stop these thieves. Although the heists continue, the chase intensifies, further closing in on the thieves until they are captured in Madrid and the big boss of the scheme, count van der Globber, is also apprehended by the German government. In his palace they will find the booty along with an immense collection of pieces from other countries, but the story's characters, in spite of having accomplished their mission, know that an even harder one awaits them: the return to the infamy of war.
