Cádiz is a famous artist 40 years her senior with whom she apprentices and falls madly in love. She meets Pascal by chance and eventually marries him. Arcadius is an antiquarian who becomes like a grandfather to Mazarine and helps her discover the story of a sect called the Arts Amantis.
