Lobos al anochecer
This is a thrilling historical novel set in Panama. On the 2nd of January of 1955 the President of Panama, Antonio Remón, was murdered while he was celebrating the triumph of his mare, Valley Star, at a horserace at the National racecourse. This happened just a few days before signing the new agreement with the USA for the conditions of use of the Panama Channel. Gloria Guardia constructs her novel gravitating around this historical fact and manages to depict the contradictions, the political, social and economical conflicts of her country during a certain period (1940 – 1955). Guardia also deals with the greed of the political class that rules the country, the continuous intromissions of the CIA and the American Government (interested in keeping its privileges over the Panama Channel), and the collaboration of the Mafia, that didn’t hesitate in joining forces with its natural enemies in order to eliminate one of the most powerful men of that time’s Caribbean region.
This could also be read as a crime or mystery novel told in three voices, or a different way to read and interpret history.
