José María Merino work stands out for its richness and variety of registers and modes. His novels have been recognized with a number of awards: Novelas y cuentos (1976), Premio Nacional de la Crítica, (1985), Nacional de la Literatura Juvenil (1993) and Miguel Delibes de Narrativa (1996). He has published Novela de Andrés Choz, (Novel by Andrés Choz); El caldero de oro, (The Gold Caldron); Cuentos del reino secreto, (Stories from the Secret Kingdom); La orilla oscura, (The Dark Shore); El centro del aire, (The Centre of Air); Cuentos del barrio del Refugio, (Stories from the Refugees’ Neighbourhood); El viajero perdido, (The lost Traveler); Las crónicas mestizas, (The Half-Bred Chronicals); Las visiones de Lucrecia, (Lucrecia’s Visiones); El oro de los sueño, (The Gold from Dreams); and El cuaderno de hojas blancas, (The Notebook with Blank Pages). Recent books: the essays Días imaginarios, (Imaginary Days), (Seix Barral, 2002) and Ficción continua, (Continuos Fiction), (Seix Barral, 2004); the novel El heredero (The Heir), (Alfaguara, 2003), and the book of short stories Cuentos de los días raros, (Storie from Strange Days).
In 2021 Merino was awarded with the National Prize for Spanish Letters.
